Backup iPhone 4 – Don`t Lose Important Data

December 12, 2013 by Anna Vince Leave a Comment

backup iphone 4Whether you want to create duplicate records or update to the latest operating system, you will first want to complete a full system backup iPhone 4. Wondering what version of iPhone you have? It is easy to find this information.

iTunes Backups

First, connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. Click on the Summary tab to access the device number as well as the current operating system. While connected to iTunes, you can also create a data backup.

Navigate to the File menu. From the drop down menu, click on “Devices”. Simply select the “Back Up” option to begin. The Summary tab also includes a “Back Up Now” option that will create the same records.

To confirm the backup was successful, choose the Preferences option from the top navigation bar. From there, you should be able to see the name of your device and the time of the most recent backup.

Keep in mind, in order to update software, the system will prompt a user for an Apple ID. Have this handy before you begin.

iCloud Backups

In addition to iTunes, iCloud offers users the option to save data via their cloud. To take advantage of this feature, select the Settings option on the iPhone. Click “Storage & Backup” then toggle the option next to “iCloud Backup” to the on position.

The iCloud backup will stay on unless it is turned off. By enabling this feature, the iPhone will update automatically each time it is connected to the Internet and connected to a power source.

How do iTunes and iCloud Differ?

If you have trouble remembering to connect your device to your computer, opting instead to charge it via the wall or in the car, then iCloud is the way to go. iTunes is the better bet for large data storage of 1GB or more. If you keep a number of videos or photos on your device, for instance, you will need to use iTunes instead of iCloud. It is also worth noting that iCloud does not back up songs and other media purchased via the iTunes store.

In need of some other backup tips? The backup process does require a specified amount of space. If your phone does not have that amount of storage available, the phone will prompt you as such. The iPhone also provides a screen users can access to see what apps take up the most space. Users can then transfer data or remove apps from the phone accordingly.

The final thing to keep in mind is that while iCloud and iTunes are great, they are more of a stop-gap than an overall solution. For instance, iTunes backs up only the most recent data on a phone. These snapshots are oftentimes not sufficient when a true data restore is needed. In those cases, software programs designed to backup data are the only surefire bet.

Remember, regular data backups are essential to keeping data intact and retrievable. Since the iPhone 4 is fully compatible with the latest iOS7 release, this is a great opportunity to create a backup before the upgrade. And now you know how with these tips on how to backup iphone 4!
