If you have a cracked Galaxy S3 screen and you are wondering how to fix it without forking out a fortune for a repair technician, then read on. We are giving some tips on how to fix up a broken Galaxy S3 screen and also providing information on where to find replacement tools.
Whilst fixing the full display of the Galaxy S3 can cost you close to $200, in most cases you will only need to replace the front screen – this is simply a piece of glass that houses the main device and adds an extra layer of protection to the actual display.
Finding the Right Tools
The first step to ensuring you fix your S3 screen safely and securely is to find all of the tools needed for the job. It may be frustrating searching for each tool needed, but it is incredibly important that you spend the extra time to find everything you need instead of using alternatives that could potentially damage your new screen or even your Galaxy S3 display.
Firstly, you will need a new glass screen, specifically made for the S3 – these can be picked up for around $15 depending on where you look, although purchasing from an online store like Amazon will always work. Next, you will need to find a selection of picks and screwdrivers – these will all be needed for unscrewing and prying the old screen off of your Galaxy S3.
There are also some other tools that come in handy, such as a suction cup, some tape, other prying tools and some key chains. We’ll explain more on why you need these for later, but for now, our best suggestion is to pick up this kit that comes with all of the tools needed, as well as the S3 screen itself for just $17.99.
Fixing the Display
The next steps will explain how to use the tools provided in the kit above to replace your broken S3 screen. We explain each step and then provide a source so that you can see images to help you with this process.
Each step will be numbered and written in bold writing. If further clarification is needed, it will be explained below the corresponding step.
Step 1 – Remove the back cover
Step 2 – Remove the battery
Step 3 – Remove the SIM card
Step 4 – Use a Heat gun to heat the borders of the S3 screen.
Heat to 170 degrees – lift the gun around 3 inches above the device, and check heat regularly. Use the heat gun on low to avoid heating the S3 too much and causing damage.
Step 5 – Use the two long blue tools, and the two triangle shaped tools to wedge into the gap between the screen and the device.
To do this step, you will need to wedge the tools provided within certain areas of the device. You may need to use the heat gun to separate the device further to insert these tools.
Step 6 – Use the picks to unglue the screen.
Work your way around the display with the wedges and carefully move them towards the bottom of the device. Be extra careful when reaching the menu buttons.
Step 7 – Carefully remove the buttons from the screen
Your S3 screen should now be deattached, but the buttons will still be glued to the glass. Use a spudger to carefully detach the buttons.
Step 8 – Remove the Glass
The glass should now be easy to move out of the way. Use tweezers to pick up any pieces of loose glass.
Step 9 – Using the blue tools, remove the metal border from the old glass – you will need this for your new glass screen.
Step 10 – Before continuing further, ensure the glue from the old display is cleaned off of the device.
Step 11 – Use Sticker tape and cut out small pieces that can run alongside the border of your device.
Step 12 – Grab your new screen, without touching the glass, and attach it to your device using the sticker tape explained above. Make sure to remove the paper from the sticker tape.
Step 13 – Follow the above steps in reverse order to reattach the new screen.
Please be very aware that fixing your screen will take extra care, and damage beyond repair is possible. After you have purchased your kit, you can view this ‘How to fix cracked Galaxy S3 screen’ guide with pictures for further clarification.
