Fortunately, it is possible to send SMS messages to other phone numbers online, and we’ll be explaining how to do this below.
Use an E-mail
It is possible to send messages to some numbers for free via your email address, although it will depend on the carrier of the number you are communicating with.
In most cases, replying to a text message sent via email will incur data charges similar to sending an MMS message. You should make it clear that you’re sending a message via email if you’re hoping for a reply.
To send a text message through your email, you will need to find the SMS gateway address of the carrier your contact is using. The SMS gateway acts as a email domain. As an example, the SMS gateway address for T-mobile is ‘@tmomail.com.’
To send a message to a T-mobile number, you simply have to add the recipients number in front of the gateway address. (email@example.com is an example)
This method is a bit fiddly because you must know the recipient’s network carrier. You will also need to find the right SMS gateway address. Finally, all messages must be sent in text format only, so any fancy formatting in your email address will prevent the message from sending.
A large list of SMS gateways was originally available on Wikipedia, but it has since been removed. You can find the list here.
Use MightyText (Android)
If you are on Android, you can set up a system through a website called MightyText to send SMS messages from your desktop. With MightyText, you can pair up your Android device, and once this happens, your second device basically acts as another portal into your text messaging app.
You can view messages, look at contacts and send SMS messages to any number by using MightyText, and because of the way it is set up, there are no additional charges. MightyText uses your Android phone to do the sending, and acts as a middleman, sending your information from the computer to your smartphone.
Use Apple’s Messages (iOS)
If you are on iOS, you will not be able to use MightyText, but if you are on iOS 8 this won’t be a problem. With iOS 8, a new feature was added to Messages. The new feature allows you to forward your messages from your iPhone to another device via your iCloud account.
Once set up, it will work both ways. Your second device will be able to see messages, and you will also be able to send messages directly to your iPhone from your second device. Just like with MightyText, this feature does no communicating with your carrier. Instead, it gives an instruction to your iPhone to send off a text with the information you have provided.
Hopefully one of these methods for texting online will be useful to you. You may need to choose either MightyText or Apple’s Messages depending on your mobile operating system.
